Bonfire Night

Hi Writers and Bookworms,

Sorry about the late posts, we will get back on track by next week.

This week's book of the week is The Gunpowder Plot by Alan Haynes. This is a non-fiction book which we wouldn't normally choose but we thought it looked great.

Here is a short description of the book:

Every child has heard of Guy Fawkes and will most likely have watched a 'guy' being burnt on a bonfire and fireworks lighting up the night sky on Bonfire Night. This book answers the questions of history that lie behind the celebrations of 5 November. Who was Guy Fawkes and how did he come to be below the chamber of the House of Lords in the first hour of 5 November 1605? What desperation drove those involved to plan a horrific massacre of the Protestant royal family and government? Alan Haynes's probing analysis offers the clearest, most balanced view yet of often conflicting evidence, as he disentangles the threads of disharmony, intrigue, betrayal, terror and retribution. In this new, updated edition he gathers together startling evidence to uncover the depth and extent of the plot, and how close the plotters came to de-stabilising the government in one of the most notorious terrorist plots of British history. This enthralling book will grip the general reader, while the scope of its detailed research will require historians of the period to consider again the commanding importance of the plot throughout the seventeenth century. You can buy or read a copy of this book on:

The Living Dead

The girl screamed. She heard the feet pounding behind her, chasing her. Wanting her.
Meet Leah Michaels. An normal girl. A normal life. But with an incredible power that every ghost and monster would sell their soul for, (if they had one). Leah, on the night of October 31st, could bring spirits back to life. On every Halloween the monsters had crept about her not ready to make their move as they had to wait until 2012.
2012 was a special year for the monsters on Halloween. On the 31st October a solar eclipse was due. A solar eclipse means that Leah's power would be at her strongest and she could bring every monster in the world back alive.

Leah hated Halloween. She hated the silly kids who would come knocking dressed as ghosts or witches. She hated the phrase 'trick or treat'. She hated it all. But every Halloween she would notice something strange. Her hands seemed to glow when she touched someone. It was very peculiar. This year she would find out what it was.

Leah braced herself for the first knocker. She had a bowl full of carrots. That normally scared them off and so they never came again. And... KNOCK KNOCK. Leah opened the door, grimacing as she did so. There stood a vampire, blood trickling down his pale face and fangs bared.
"Trick or Treat?" He growled menacingly. Leah frowned at him and handed him a carrot. But when she touched him lightly her hand went cold and froze right through to the bone. Puzzled, she drew her hand back quickly. The Vampire roared at the treat and stormed off.
That was strange she thought. She decided to follow. Locking the door behind her, Leah carefully and quietly followed the vampire back. They ended up stopping outside a small abandoned house of which the vampire barged through the door. Hesitantly, she followed the vampire in. There was a loud bang and Leah shivered. There was a lot of cackles drifting from the basement. The sound echoed in the eery corridor. She went down the stairs, sneakily on tip toe.
They came into view. A headless person (gender unknown), a zombie with limbs missing and cross eyed, a haggard witch and of course, Vampire, were stood around a stone table. In the center was a massive cauldron, bubbling and frothing. Leah was gaping in shock and terror. She tried to turn back but tripped on a loose floor board. All four monsters spun round and hissed in shock at the sight of a girl amongst them. The Vampire recognised her and smiled menacingly at her.
"You have come! The Healer has come! Hurry! We only have little time left!" He screeched. All four freaks lunged towards her before Leah had time to breathe.
"Wait!!!!! What do you want? Please!" She yelled.
The witch eyed her curiously.
"The child does not know her own strengths! Girl! You have a power! You.. Can bring us back to life! You must! It is your destiny!"She murmured.
Leah looked at her hands, which glowed softly. The monsters crowded round her, staring, mesmerised at her glowing hands.
"Touch me first!" Groaned the zombie.
Leah screamed. The witch hushed her and she gathered the rest of the monsters around. Leah took this opportunity to run.
"Hey! She's gone!" Stormed the witch, her eyes glowing red furiously. She grabbed her broom and zapped herself out of the room, the rest following her.
Leah screamed once more. She heard the feet pounding behind her, chasing her. Wanting her. Leah turned around and without thinking shot out bolts of lightning which destroyed her pursuers. Amazed, she looked at her hands. her hands had destroyed every monster in the world. Shaking in fear and terror, she walked back home.
This was not a Happy Halloween.

Mystery Aura

The gun lay on the floor. Bond picked it up and aimed it at the suspected culprit. BANG! BANG! The body lay on the floor, blood oozing out of the gaping hole where his heart should lie, beating. Agent 007 slotted the gun in his pocket and walked out of the derelict warehouse.
"James! James!" Agent Smith stormed after him. " What happened in there? Helen wanted him alive and now -." Smith broke off as a female wearing boots as black as soot up to her knees and red hair cascading down her back pointed her machine gun in their direction.
The lady gave a harsh chuckle. "Well, well, well. Mr Bond, you can not keep out of my way now can you? If you would just hand over the nuclear results, I will make your death quick and easy. Or I could savour your death if you refuse to hand it over. But we both know you have it. So make it snappy." She smiled menacingly at him with her blood red lips. Bond's face expression never changed.
"Hello, Jenna. I hope you remember that 5 years ago I beat you in a race for the stolen jewels of Egypt. That gave me the 007 title. Oh and I would put down that gun of yours. You don't want to wind me up now. I have a new box of tricks to play with." Bond shot back smoothly.

Jenna looked at him. Her finger hovered over the trigger longingly. But after a seemingly long debate in her head she dropped the gun. It clattered on the floor. Jenna raised her eyebrows.

"What's your plan now? You expect me to just stand here?"
"I love how witty you are. Hmmmm. I have no plan but..." Bond whipped the gun off the floor which was lying in between them. Smith yanked his gun out of his pocket and targeted Jenna.
"Ah, two against one. Kinda unfair don't you think?" Jenna pouted.
"Not at all. Considering the fact that you are the villain in this case. One more unasked for movement and I pull the trigger. Now put your hands in the air. Good, next turn around, so you are facing the wall." Bond demanded. Jenna started to complain but Bond silenced her with a glare.
Bond motioned Smith to get into the nearby truck who silently crept away. He pulled the truck up to Bond. With one quick fluid motion Bond had grabbed Jenna and pushed her in the truck.
"Step on it Smith." James said.
Jenna was struggling from Bond's grasp. He sneered at her.
" Nice try." He chuckled.
Smith turned back for a split second to look at James but the car veered off track. Quickly realising what was happening, Smith tried to regain the cars balance but it was too late. The back of the car spun into an massive building causing them to crash and Jenna to lose consciousness. The side of the car was wrecked and Jenna was spouting blood like a waterfall whilst being completely unaware. James looked over at Jenna with panic written all over his face. He shoved open his car door and pulled Jenna after him, threw her over his shoulder and summoned Smith to follow.
James Bond left the crash scene with co agent in tow and a beautiful dead girl on his shoulders with a mystery aura surrounding him. His mission completed.

Do you hear me?

"Bond, do you hear me? Run!" screamed Jessica Clarke down his ear clip. His feet pounded on the gravel.  Then ahead of him, Bond saw a van screeched to a halt. Then, she stepped out along, with her bodyguard, her blood red lipstick shone in the moonlight. She began to stride toward Bond in her red killer heels.
"We meet again, Scarlett." said Bond.
"Indeed we do." Scarlett replied. Bond began slowly pulling the gun out of his back pocket."Hand over the formula."
"Unfortunately, I do not have the formula with me at this precise moment"
"Well, then the girl dies"
"You wouldn't dare kill her. She's barely of age."
"Oh, yes I would, watch me!"
Scarlett whispered an order to her body guard and he walked towards the van. He dragged Sophia out of the car. Scarlett pulled out a gun and placed it against Sophia's head.

Then, in a flash, Bond shot a bullet at Scarlett, she dropped the gun as her body collapsed on the floor. Blood came streaming out of her head. The bodyguard ran for the gun, but he was too late. Bond shot a second bullet at the body guard and  he screamed as he hit the dusty ground. Bond ran over to Sophia.
"Are you okay?" Bond asked Sophia.
"I..I..I think I'll be okay, just a little shaken." Sophia murmured, her head pounding like a base drum. She collapsed on the floor, and her eyes close. "Sophia?! SOPHIA?! Wake up!" Bond screamed. He pulled out his phone and punched 3 numbers in: 9-9-9. His phone beeped and the call connected.

Two hours later, Bond was sat next to Sophia who was in a hospital bed. Her eyes were still closed. Bond had been waiting for what seemed like forever, just to see her sparkling blue eyes open and look at him. He held her hand and willed her to awaken. Then, a machine behind him began to beep urgently, suddenly a swarm of doctors and nurses wearing plain white clothing gathered round Sophia, pushing Bond out of the way. A tall man, wearing the same uniform, lead him out of the room, and towards some chairs, where other people sat, grimly.

After waiting for almost half an hour a nurse walked up to him. "I'm afraid she's not going to make it" she whispered "I'm sorry"
Bond simply stood up and walked out of the hospital ward, silently.
